Hard water areas should consider the use of installing limescale inhibitors to help reduce the build up of limescale on appliances, even those areas not supplied by hard water can definitely benefit from the installation of limescale protection. This build up can and will dramatically reduce the efficiency and very likely lifespan of appliances such as boilers, washing machines, dishwashers and showers. The build up of limescale can also offer a breeding ground for bacteria particularly on appliances that are not often used.
When to use a Magnetic Lime Scale Inhibitor – These are designed for single appliance protection such as washing machines and combination boilers. This is because they provide a temporary state of protection by temporarily altering the shape of damaging crystals making it more difficult for them to cling onto the heated surfaces. As the effect is temporary they are installed between 1 and 2 metres from the appliance, once the crystal have passed through the heat exchangers in the appliance they are flushed away in the normal flow of water. These are available in compression and pushfit, 15mm and 22mm and with different grades of model having between 2 and 3 years life effectiveness
When to use an Electrolytic Lime Scale Inhibitor – These are designed for protection of whole house or individual appliances, in particular showers. They work by introducing zinc to the water supply which has the effect of encouraging a different kind of crystal formation making it difficult for them to adhere to heated surfaces. This method of control has a more permanent control effect than magnetic protection, and therefore is used for whole house protection , even if the water is stored in heating vessels. These are available in compression and pushfit, 15mm and 22mm and with different grades of model having between 2 and 5 years life effectiveness
When to use an Electronic Scale Inhibitor – These are designed again for whole house protection by producing high frequency electro-magnetic signals which discourages the limescale particles from being able to cling to surfaces once heated. An electrical coil is wrapped around incoming cold water supplies to boilers and extension kist are available to extend this to other areas requiring control. A suitable mains electrical supply is required at the main protection point
